This summer we have had our first grove artist in residence for a while and I'm delighted that Amanda Loomes was working with grove 1 - 7 May. You can see how Amanda approached the residency and emerging work in Projects. The invitation to work in Bury St Edmunds prompted Amanda to contact British Sugar and to focus on the production of sugar, it's importance to the town, and it's seductive role in our lives.
This summer will also see the fifth groving project across the town centre in Bury St Edmunds. For 2023 artists will make small works in response to the theme Encroach. Each day for two weeks during August a new work will appear on the streets, and people can enjoy them, move them, or take them home. Each work and its site will be posted on social media and the groving blog.
In 2022 the theme was Relic and all of the works, photos in their location and the written responses are posted on the groving blog.
grove is a flexible, supportive opportunity for artists to concentrate on making new work and test ideas. The purpose is to enable artists to concentrate for a short period on developing or trialing work, with the use of a large garden, project space and digital equipment. Artists are invited to work with grove and are provided with accommodation, working space, promotion and an event. Hosted artists are not asked to necessarily complete work or to mount an exhibition. Emerging ideas and proposals for work can be tested and shared with an invited audience in any way appropriate. The project space is particularly suitable for immersive installation, film and sound. Follow grove @grove_projects.
grove is curated by artist and curator Barbara Dougan and situated at 1 Grove Road, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk IP33 3BE.I just wanted to write to say thank you so much for inviting me to take part in the grove projects residency. This invitation provided the validation for me to contact British Sugar and the raison d’être to produce a new body of work. At the same I have loved responding to domestic life at 1, Grove Road. This has somehow given me permission to bring in a more personal, intimate aspect into my work. This is the first residency where I have worked so intensely with a view to sharing work after such a short period of time. By necessity this has brought a playfulness to my work that I have really enjoyed. It will be interesting to see how these ripples go on to influence my future work.
