grove has taken a different shape this year, with artist Jac Campbell on a residency based at my late mother's studio and garden. My mother was an artist and remarkable gardener and it is wonderfully appropriate that Jac has explored the garden and outhouses as they lapse into untended verdancy. Jac has sensitively evoked the atmosphere of the site and the sense of personal histories through photography, sound, film, prints and anthotypes. Work and words can be found in Projects.
Last summer Amanda Loomes was working with grove and you can see how Amanda approached the residency and emerging work in Projects. The invitation to work in Bury St Edmunds prompted Amanda to contact British Sugar and to focus on the production of sugar, its importance to the town, and its seductive role in our lives.
groving will not take place this year. Past projects with small sculptures on the streets across the town centre in Bury St Edmunds can be seen on the blog.
grove is a flexible, supportive opportunity for artists to concentrate on making new work and test ideas. The purpose is to enable artists to concentrate for a short period on developing or trialing work, with the use of a large garden, project space and digital equipment. Artists are invited to work with grove and are provided with accommodation, working space, promotion and an event. Hosted artists are not asked to necessarily complete work or to mount an exhibition. Emerging ideas and proposals for work can be tested and shared with an invited audience in any way appropriate. Follow grove on Instagram and Facebook @barbara-at-grove.
grove is curated by artist and curator Barbara Dougan and the projects take place in Bury St Edmunds.
